What is the Rockport Rattler and how does it work?

The Rockport Rattler jig was the first rattling jig head to be introduced to both freshwater and saltwater anglers in May 2003 with not only a sound producing loud 5 MM glass rattling chamber, but also with various jig head colors complete with eyes that are either red or gold diamond cut glass eyes that reflect light or 3D Eyes that actually move in a clear housing.

The Rockport Rattler jig combines sound, color and light reflecting diamond cut glass eyes or realistic moving 3D eyes that gives every angler that uses it an advantage over an angler using a conventional jig or screw lock jig that doesn’t make noise.

The Rockport Rattlers are coated with our clear Flexi-Glue, which is a patentable trade secret. It hardens up, and continues to harden like concrete does. This protects the integrity of the eyes and the lure color.

There are three important qualities that make the Rockport Rattler the most effective jig on the market today.

1) Sound:
The Rockport Rattler jigs are designed so at there is no lead to muffle the sound. The rattle chamber is flush with the hook, and therefore the hook acts as an amplifier to amplify the sound. Exactly like on a submarine where the sound is amplified and transmitted by a thin wire around the rest of the sub. Therefore the Rockport Rattler is actually louder than a glass rattle by itself or inserted into a soft plastic.

2) Eyes:
While sound from a Rockport Rattler jig will attract fish, the eyes make it a more realistic presentation when the game fish finds it. Eyes are very important to a lure. The large Wild Eyes actually move and make a little rattle sound themselves to go with the rattling chamber; and the red and gold diamond cut eyes reflect light. You'll find that in muddy water you may have trouble seeing your lure, but the light reflected off the red or gold diamond cut glass eyes is quite visible in muddy water.

3) Color:
The different colored Rockport Rattler jigs allow you to match the jig color to your soft plastic color or give it some contrast. This gives an angler more versatility with his soft plastic game. This also makes a lure more natural looking than having just a piece of lead in front of an expensive soft plastic.

Since May 2003 the Rockport Rattler has caught a variety of species of fish in both saltwater and fresh water from the elusive Trophy Speckled Trout, Redfish, Flounder, Snook, Kingfish, Shark, Black Drum, Tarpon, Grouper , Cobia and freshwater Bass.

Sound is one of the most important qualities of any lure:

The Rockport Rattler jig was developed to make sound to attract trout, redfish, and flounder when fishing with soft plastic lures.

Sound and the ability to "hear" are what redfish, speckled trout and fish in general depend on for survival and spawning. As research has provided in the following article.

http://web.mit.edu/seagrant/aqua/cfer/acoustics/exsum/holt/extended.html

The speed of sound in air is approximately 330 m/s (or 700 mph). Sound travels 5 times faster and is 11 times louder in water than in air:

On land and in air an angler can hear the Rockport Rattler 10 - 15 ft. away. Consequently when a Rockport Rattler jigs is worked in the water a trout, redfish or flounder can hear it from 50 – 100 feet away!

When a predator like a trout, redfish or flounder hears something, you can bet it's going to come check it out. The result will be that you'll get a quick reaction bite. It's their reaction bite that'll make you a productive lure angler when the fish are not in a feeding frenzy. The sound in a Rockport Rattler will help a novice angler catch fish even if he has not developed a sophisticated lure presentation.

For years Sound has been put into rattling top waters and corks to attract fish to come out of their ambush points or hiding in the grass to come up to the surface of the water and attack you lure or bait.

A Rockport Rattler jig gives an angler the ability to go down into the deeper depths of the water and make sound where the fish actually are hiding. The result is that you’ll catch 5 times the fish compared to jigs that make no noise or a noise making top water.

The sound in the Rockport Rattler makes also gives an angler an added advantage when they are fishing soft plastics where there is plenty of live mullet, bait, etc. present.

The Rockport Rattler is very effective for both Saltwater and Freshwater anglers:

Bass Pro Champions have been secretly using glass rattles inserted in soft plastics for several years. In an article by Tim Tucker dated June 19, 2000 he writes, "And pros like Shaw Grigsby, Mickey Bruce, Paul Elias and Russ Bringger have discovered that rattling worms have a definite application in three situations: weedy lakes, fishing off-colored water, and during spawning season."

The reason why is that in water, sound waves are transmitted at 5,000 feet per second. Bass detect sound through their lateral line at a distance of up to 100 feet, about twice as far as they can see!

The same rules apply to saltwater fishing as well!

The advantage the Rockport Rattler has over glass worm rattles is the rattle is in the jig itself and won't break if you drop it, it won't squirt out on a fish bite and it doesn't adversely affect the natural action and presentation of your soft plastic lure.

Soft plastics that are a perfect fit on the Rockport Rattle are the Norton Lures Bull Minnows and Sand Eels, Tidal Surge split tails, Berkley Power Bait, Texas Trout Killers, Salt Water Bass Assassin - Texas Assassin soft plastic lures, as well as Cocahoes and tout tails. For rigging tips see our FAQ and Rigging Tips section.

Another advantage about the Rockport Rattler jig is that the snug fit will keep your soft plastic lure from slipping; or tearing when changing lure colors like the jig heads with prongs or screw locks do. Therefore, you can change lure colors without tearing up your soft plastic lures.

Another advantage using a Rockport Rattler jig is that by not inserting a rattle in the soft plastic tail by other methods, your lure will not lose its natural action or presentation by the added weight of glass rattles in the soft plastics tail.

On the Rockport Rattler XMAX jig, which has no head or lead, just the Rockport Rattler attached to the 2/0, 3/0 or 4/0 Mustad Ultra Point BLN Wide Gap hook you now have an advantage of fishing skinny water of 2 ft. or less and 1 ft. of grass or fresh water hydrilla. So with only a hook and Rockport Rattler XMAX and your favorite soft plastic you now have available a very slow sinking soft plastic to work very shallow water. With XMAX you can walk the dog on the surface or let it sink slowly and jig it just above the grass beds.
